CIMS Burial Search Major Update: What You Need to Know!
Burial Search is an application developed by the CIMS team to share cemetery data with the public. It is available to all CIMS clients as an add-on that allows the public to easily access and navigate a cemetery’s information via the web, a smartphone, or an on-site kiosk. When a cemetery administrator adds a new burial, or makes a change in CIMS, that information is immediately available to the public on the cemetery’s Burial Search Website. At the end of April 2024, the new CIMS Burial Search update went live for all cemeteries currently using this application.
Since the codebase that Burial Search was written on is nearly 8 years old, some of the technologies were out of date. The CIMS development team took this upgrade as an opportunity to not only update the code but also to overhaul the look and feel of the program to make it easier for cemeteries to manage and for the public to utilize.
Burial Search still has all the same great features: simple name searching, displaying selected images from CIMS, interactive maps, available spaces, veterans list, printable maps, and GPS-powered walk-to-grave wayfinding. We have also made a few enhancements to these features—simple name searching now automatically checks first, last, middle, aka, and maiden names. Space detail printing now has a multi-map layout showing a space location at different zoom levels to help with navigation, and mobile viewing and the walk-to-grave interface are better than ever!
The new Burial Search has a wealth of customization options, including:
- A control panel that allows CIMS users to choose what information is searchable by and displayed to the public. All map options currently available to CIMS users will be available to customize how cemetery maps appear to the public; including, but not limited to: flagging, special colors for veterans, and the ability to color by space type.
- Simple and advanced search modes. The advanced search mode will allow for searching based on multiple data points.
- Built-in “available space” and “veteran” quick listing options.
- The ability to display cemetery contact information at the bottom of the Burial Search website.
All current clients utilizing Burial Search have been updated to the new system free of charge. The web addresses for Burial Search sites have remained the same, and QR codes continue to work as intended.
